What we do

Social care services are relevant to all of us. At any one time 150,000 people receive social care services in Wales, therefore most of us will know someone who receives care now or at some stage in the future.

Trends suggest that people in Wales are living healthier and longer lives, meaning they're more likely to use some form of social care over longer periods in future. This makes it vital that those delivering the services can be relied upon to work to the highest standards.

And that’s where the Care Council for Wales has an important role to play. We aim to give the public the highest confidence in care by helping develop a social care workforce that can be trusted to deliver quality services in a highly-professional way.

As the first organisation to regulate the social care profession in Wales, we aim to ensure that the social care workforce is safe to practice; has the right skills and qualifications to work to a high professional standard and is attracting enough of the right people into its ranks to deliver quality care, now and into the future.

We have a duty to set high standards for skills, training and behaviour for those working in the sector. We want to make sure that everyone employed as a social worker, or social care worker, is acting safely, and in a way that makes the most of their skills. We also aim to make sure that there are enough workers to help individuals reach their potential, protect them from harm and offer them a choice on how they are supported.
