Carers

The Care at Home workforce study highlighted the hugely significant role played by unpaid carers (typically family, friends and neighbours) in providing care for people. The study included the recommendation "that the role of carers is more actively supported by front line workers and others to enhance the quality of care for service users".

During 2011/12, the Care Council is working with carers, carers’ organisations and others to explore how this recommendation might be achieved. This will include:

  • Strengthening Care Council direct engagement with carers and carers’ organisations
  • Ensuring that social workers and social care staff have the knowledge and skills to support carers
  • Potentially developing new products to support the workforce working with carers
  • Making contact with those delivering training for carers and sharing Care Council products, e.g., knowledge sets and dementia practice guidance
  • Including Carers as a focus in the Confidence in Care campaign
