Older People Workforce
Development of Practice Guidance for People with Dementia
Building on the results of the research study ‘Good Practice in relation to working with Older People Experiencing Dementia’ (Care Council for Wales, 2009), the Care Council commissioned the development of workforce practice guidance. The focus of the guidance is on information that will assist managers and social care staff to raise their levels of understanding and competence in person centred working with people with dementia.
The guidance has been developed by Taith Ltd who also undertook the original study. The guidance is based on first hand examples of what has worked and been learned. It contains key messages; guidance to managers; sample information and worksheets that can be used to inform the workforce and others about person centred working and its introduction, as well as sample guidance to staff on good practice supporting the process with service users and carers.

The following two appendices from the guidance are for you to download and use:
There are also a number of relevant QCF units within the health and social care diplomas that support the learning and development of social care workers in relation to person centred care for people with dementia
Summary of Workforce Strategies
In 2008, the Care Council for Wales set up the Older People Workforce Development Network for Health and Social Care (the Network) at the request of the Welsh Assembly Government. In 2010, the Network developed a brief over-view strategy / summary of existing workforce strategies as a first step towards developing a "new" strategy for the older people’s workforce. This document provides a ‘one stop shop’ and identifies themes, priorities and gaps.
