Bilingualism
The provision of social care services through the medium of Welsh has long been an area with which the Care Council has been concerned and been viewed as a champion. The importance of language choice in public services, in particular health and social care which often support people at time of crisis or vulnerability is clearly identified by the Welsh Assembly Government through One Wales and Iaith Pawb.
As part of our work, we develop bi-lingual resources and resources which promote language awareness and the importance of responding sensitively to individual language needs by providing meaningful services. These include:
They All Speak English Anyway
New guidance on how to use this Welsh language awareness resource have been produced in response to suggestions received regarding what additional resources would be useful. It offers guidance on what is included in the training resource, how to use it as well as who could benefit from such training and information. We hope it will provide useful suggestions on how to use the CD Rom and help people to understand that this can be a valuable and flexible resource.
The contemporary Welsh language awareness training resource They All Speak English Anyway was published in October 2010. The aim of the CD Rom is to increase awareness and understanding among social care workers of language needs and how to positively respond to this.
It presents information about the background of the Welsh language, its history and status, exploring language and power, the bilingual services user’s experience, draws on relevant international research, and reflects and considers the implications of current policy and legislation.
