Bilingualism

They All Speak English Anyway

'They All Speak English Anyway' is a modern training resource which discusses the importance of language awareness in bilingual Wales.

The author of the original pack fifteen years ago, Elaine Davies from Cwmni Iaith, was commissioned to update the pack. This builds and expands on the original resource and ensured that the work responded to the fundamental questions about language and power and language and services.

They All Speak English Anyway CD Rom 'They All Speak English Anyway' illustrated left, has been developed as a CD Rom for a training facilitator, but it also provides extensive information and valuable reflection opportunities for individuals' who can use the resource for individual study.

The aim of the training resource is to raise the awareness and understanding of social care workers of language needs and how to respond positively to these.

The CD Rom provides background information on the Welsh language, its history and status. It discusses language and power, the experiences of bilingual service users, relevant global research and reflects and considers the implications of current legislation and policy. It also provides an opportunity to consider, discuss and analyse experiences; to reflect on values and attitudes and recognise the challenges that arise for individuals and agencies.

We hope this resource will contribute to ensuring a better understanding and language awareness amongst the social care workforce both Welsh and non-Welsh speaking, and support them to provide good quality services.

Guidance on how to use the language awareness training resource

New guidance on how to use They All Speak English Anyway has been produced. It provides an overview of what is included in the training resource, how to use it as well as who could benefit from such training and information. We hope it will provide useful suggestions on how to use the CD Rom and help people to understand that this can be a valuable and flexible resource.
