Recruiting Well Update September 2010
Changes to the Law for Employers
The Equalities Act 2010 is due to become law in October 2010. The new Act strengthens and simplifies previous legislation relating to discrimination. It replaces previous legislation such as the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and offers a framework of discrimination law which sets out to protect individuals from unfair treatment and promote a fairer and more equal society.
The Act covers the groups that were protected by existing law. The Act refers to age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership and pregnancy and maternity as protected characteristics.
The Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR) have produced a guide to help employers understand the new Equality Act.
The guide is entitled:
'What equality law means for you as an employer: when you recruit someone to work for you'
This guide is available from the CEHR website.
The Government Equalities Office has commissioned ACAS to produce a guide for employers.
This is entitled:
'ACAS guide on the Equality Act - what’s new for employers?'
The guide is available through the Government Equalities Office website.
These guides supplement Recruiting Well and provide the current guidance in relation to equality in recruitment
