Sector Skills Council

In February 2005, Skills for Care and Development (in Wales the Care Council for Wales) was licensed as the Sector Skills Council with responsibility for adult and children social care and later for early years.

Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) are independent UK wide organisations. They are employer-led and their primary purpose is to deal with the skills and productivity needs of their sector throughout the UK. Each SSC agrees sector priorities and targets with its employers and partners to address five key goals:

  • reducing skills gaps and shortages
  • improving productivity, business and public service performance
  • increasing opportunities to boost the skills and productivity of everyone in the sector's workforce, including action on equal opportunities
  • improving learning supply, including apprenticeships
  • higher education and national occupational standards

The Care Council for Wales is the manifestation of Skills for Care and Development in Wales, and works in partnership with Skills for Care, the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, the Scottish Social Services Council and the Children’s Workforce Development Council in England and the General Social Care Council.

Sector Qualifications and Learning Strategy

Skills for Care and Development (SfC&D) (and therefore all its delivery partners) is required to renew the Sector Qualification (and Learning) Strategy which is designed to outline the strategic priorities and performance measures to meet the current and future skills and learning needs of the sector.

If you wish to comment on the Sector Qualification and Learning Strategy feedback must be completed by the 19th January 2011.
