Care Council Welcomes Findings of Review
6 August 2010

The Care Council has welcomed the findings of an independent Welsh Assembly Government review of how the organisation has performed since it was established in 2001.

Rhian Huws Williams, Chief Executive of the Care Council, said: "We are very pleased this review has recognised the considerable strides made in establishing a regulatory body from scratch - a modern organisation reflecting the views of service users and carers - which has already used its remit to tackle poor practice so as to maintain confidence in the social work and social care profession. The focus has been on improvement and we have put in place a range of developmental initiatives too."

In its executive summary, the report of the review findings states: "The Care Council for Wales has very successfully set itself up and delivered major outputs. This has created a significant and important record of achievements and provided a good basis for its future work."

The report mentions in particular the Care Council’s track-record for involving service users and carers in its decision-making process, stating: "It has demonstrated good practice in a number of areas, including the complex one of user and carer involvement, which in some areas goes well beyond consultation and into practical examples of co-production."

The report includes recommendations on how the Care Council can build on its successful start to ensure it can fulfill its functions effectively in the future.

Rhian Huws Williams added: "This review has been a positive and constructive exercise. While it has praised the Care Council for the work it has done to-date, its recommendations have helped reinforce the need for many of the actions we have already taken or are in the process of rolling out. These will help us work closely with others in the social work and social care sector to develop a progressive strategy that will ensure workers get the right training and support to be excellent practitioners."
