Deputy Minister announces White Paper
on future of social services in Wales

Gwenda Thomas, Deputy Minister for Social Services has announced her intention to produce a White Paper on the future of Social Services early in 2011.

Addressing the annual National Social Services Conference in Llandudno, her keynote speech detailed the Welsh Assembly Government vision for social services now and into the future. By bringing together all current policy and grant programme reviews into one White Paper, the Assembly Government will plan how to deliver a sustainable social service over the next decade.

Mrs Thomas said: " I acknowledge how much has already been achieved in social services and remain ambitious for what they can and do achieve for disadvantaged individuals in our society, but also for the role they play in planning and running an integrated, efficient and high-quality service that assures the wellbeing and health of the people of Wales.

"In announcing my intention to produce a White Paper, I am preparing to establish a comprehensive statement on the future of social services in the medium and long term for Wales. I believe that the success of ten years of devolution and the challenge of our time makes it right to create a new consensus on the future of social services in Wales."
