Social Care Accolades 2011 Winners
Effective Recruitment and Retention
Cardiff Council for its project to address recruitment and retention challenges in Children Services. Steps were taken to retain staff and rebuild expertise within front line social work teams by supporting newly qualified social workers.
Learning Together
Monmouthshire County Council for its work to improve support and guidance for disabled young people moving into adulthood. The ‘Your Life, Your Choices’ project aims to help young people, aged 14-25, have more choice and control in planning for their future and provide the necessary support to make this possible.
ABM University Health Board for its e-learning programme to improve the expertise of staff supporting people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. The flexible and accessible training was well received by staff, improving their skills and helping them to deliver more support for those in need.
Maintaining Independence
Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council for its ‘Together Improving Life Skills’ project where staff worked closely with people with learning disabilities to help them learn the skills needed to live independently. Staff received training to enable them to deliver a wide variety of teaching methods to help users gain a nationally recognised qualification in Practical Life Skills.
Supporting Effective Intervention with Children and their Families
Gwynedd Council for its work in integrating risk assessment of significant harm to individuals into its social work processes. Specialised tools were developed to support assessments in areas such as substance misuse, neglect and change.
Career of Choice
Social Care Partnership in North Wales for its Care Ambassador project that aims to raise the profile of social care as a fulfilling career by using social care workers to share their experiences with students in schools and colleges. The Care Ambassadors promote the opportunities available in social care and visit Job Centre Plus organisations to educate advisors about careers in care.
Users and Carers Shaping Services
Wrexham County Borough Council for its project to train a group of people with learning disabilities to help others with learning disabilities receive the best support available. The initiative aims to improve the standard of support available by using service users to quality check the services available and provide direct feedback.
Social Workers for Tomorrow
Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council for its work in developing the first post-qualification social work training in Wales to meet the most urgent practice needs based on discussions with staff. The training has helped to maintain high standards of service delivery and improve the quality of frontline social work practice to ensure users receive the best support possible.
Improving Welsh Language Provision
Gwynedd Council for its development of a bilingual computer software package, that can be used remotely by community care workers, giving them a choice of English or Welsh as their preferred language. This innovative tool is the first of its kind in this area and is only available in Gwynedd.
