Care Council Welcomes Minister’s Announcements Back

The Care Council for Wales has welcomed an announcement by the Deputy Minister for Children and Social Services that there will be a White Paper next year on the regulation of practitioners and the regulation and inspection of services.

Responding to the announcement made by Gwenda Thomas AM at the National Social Services Conference, Care Council Chair, Arwel Ellis Owen, said: "The social services policy paper and proposed Bill focus on the transformation of services and driving up professionalism. It is right and sensible that we make sure we have the right regulations and standards to support future models.”

"We look forward to working closely with the Government and partners to scope and inform future regulation based on evidence, experience and reflection. Similarly, we welcome the announcement of a new group, which will look at standards and performance in social care, and we look forward to contributing to this work.

He also welcomed the announcement by the Deputy Minister of a ‘citizen panel’ to give users and carers who are involved in social services a voice in the strategic decisions taken at an all-Wales level.

"As a citizen-centred regulatory body, we want to make sure we contribute to that work and also learn from the panel. This is a great opportunity to design and deliver a regulatory framework that is fit for the future," he added.
