Business as usual in Wales as changes introduced in England Back
It is business as usual in Wales as the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) takes over the responsibility in England for the regulation of social workers from the General Social Care Council (GSCC).
The change in responsibilities in England has prompted the Care Council for Wales, the Northern Ireland Social Care Council and the Scottish Social Services Council to agree a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which sets out the principles of exchanging information between themselves and the HCPC.
Following agreement of the MOU, policies and procedures will now be drawn up to detail how the exchange of information will happen in practice.
Rhian Huws Williams, Chief Executive of the Care Council, said: “While the beginning of August signals a significant change in social work regulation in England, it is business as usual here in Wales. It is the end of an era with the abolition of the GSCC, and it is fitting to pay tribute to the work and achievements of the organisation since it was formed. The GSCC has played a key role in professionalising the social work profession in England and the baton has now been passed to the HCPC, with whom we are looking forward to having a close and productive relationship.
“This new agreement on the sharing of information is a positive step forward to ensure all the regulators of social work around the UK are working collaboratively and learning from each other to ensure we have high-quality and professional social workers operating in all the home countries,” she added.
