National Occupational Standards (NOS)
Why do we need NOS?
NOS have numerous uses in the workplace or in the development of the individual. These include: recruitment, staff development review, promotion, identifying training or Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs, and staff planning. They help maintain high quality social care services.
What are the benefits of NOS?
NOS can assist workers and employers.
For the individual social care workers they:
- help to ensure that skills and knowledge match a job description
- assist in providing evidence for an appraisal/staff development review
- detail the competences, knowledge and skills for use at interview
- assisting in matching skills and knowledge for a promoted post
- provide key roles when updating a CV
- assist individuals to meet their CPD requirements
For the employer they:
- help identify workers that are capable, competent and well trained
- contribute to organisational goals and service provision
- inform the design and delivery of staff training programmes
- help in planning for staff development and retention
