Foster Care Standards

Links between Service and Occupational Standards

The introduction of the Care Standards Act 2000 and a range of subsequent policy and guidance recognising the need to improve the experiences and outcomes for children and young people who are looked after away from their own families has led to the development of standards against which their care can be measured.

A mapping exercise was undertaken which aimed to demystify the various standards for supervising social workers, foster carers and managers. By becoming familiar with the different standards and how they interrelate, it is hoped that workers will increasingly add value to each other’s contributions leading to improved outcomes for service users.

The resulting Guide to the links between National Occupational and Service Standards in Foster Care aims to make use of these different frameworks. It shows how standards can be used to clarify roles, learning needs and assessment criteria.
