Basic Skills Toolkit

This range of guidance materials and resources has been produced by the Care Council for Wales in partnership with Basic Skills Cymru and the TUC to support the development of good basic skills for all employees across the sector.

Each resource has, of necessity, to be as appropriate as possible for a wide range of occupations and staff levels. If individual organisations wish to customise any resource to target a specific group of employers or employees, they should contact the Care Council for Wales in the first instance.

For employers and employees, the terms English Welsh and maths have been used in place of "basic skills". The sector believes that these terms will be more easily understood by employers and employees and will support engagement activities.

Much of the material is suitable for use with employees whose first language is not either English or Welsh. Basic skills providers are continuing to develop new teaching and learning materials in response to the significant increase in demand from migrant workers both from the European Union and outside. For advice and guidance on provision for speakers of other languages employers are advised to contact the Employer Pledge.

The toolkit provides three categories of support;

  • Information and guidance
  • Strategies and tools
  • Contacts and application details

Further and more detailed information on any aspect of basic skills engagement and achievement may be obtained by contacting;
