Audit of Children and Families Teaching and Learning in the Social Work Degree in Wales

The Care Council recently commissioned the University of Sussex to conduct a research project into the teaching and learning of children and family’s social work on the social work degree in Wales. The objectives of the project were to identify:

  • The place of Child and Family teaching and learning in the curriculum
  • What is taught on the Programme
  • How it is taught
  • The contribution of Practice Learning Opportunities
  • The strengths of the current provision
  • What are the gaps, weaknesses of current provision
  • Recommendations for future development
  • How the Common Core of Skills, Knowledge and Understanding for the Children and Young People’s Workforce in Wales are included in the programme and how any of the six areas of practice need to be developed.

The research involved:

  • Initial mapping of current teaching
  • In depth telephone interviews with relevant staff members
  • Exploration of the perspectives of key stakeholders which included three cluster events across Wales bringing together the views of HEIs, students, graduates, service users and carers, employers and others.

This audit was carried out as part of our regulatory function and the recommendations will be presented to the task group on the social work and social care workforce recently set up by the Deputy Minister for Social Services.
