How to renew Registration Qualified Social Workers

Part 1 of the Register

Note: If you are registered as a social care manager or worker see Part 2 of the Register

Period of registration and notification to renew

The current registration period is 3 years. We will notify you 84 days before your registration becomes due for renewal. At least 5 weeks before your renewal date you will need to send us:

  • your renewal form
  • your signed post-registration training and learning record of achievement (PRTL)
  • your renewal fee of £30 (or pay through a Direct Debit mandate)

A registrant who recently renewed their registration told us;

‘Apologies for the delay. It was very complicated last time, with getting signatures, so this time I put my head in the sand and ignored it for as long as I could. But you’ve made it a lot easier, which is lovely! I’d have done it straight away if I’d known.’

Post-registration training and learning record of achievement (PRTL)

You are required to submit a record of the 15 days or 90 hours PRTL you have completed since registration. A PRTL record of achievement form will be enclosed with every renewal invitation pack. Your record should include the date and duration as well as a brief description of each bit of training and learning you list. This could include study, training, courses, seminars, reading, teaching or other activities which could reasonably be expected to advance your professional development, or contribute to the development of the profession as a whole. A PRTL record of achievement form will be enclosed with every renewal invitation pack.

You can maintain your PRTL record online through the Registrant Portal.

You only need to send us your PRTL record in order to renew (not annually with your annual fee).

PRTL Requirements for Registered Social Workers and Social Care Workers - Guidance This guide may help you in recording appropriate training and learning to represent your professional development.

PRTL portfolio

You should maintain a portfolio of evidence to support your PRTL record. You must discuss your PRTL record with your line manager or equivalent to ensure they agree that it advances your professional development or contributes to the development of the profession as a whole.

PRTL evidence

A random sample of registrants due to renew will be required to provide evidence that they have completed the 15 days or 90 hours of PRTL they have listed on their record of achievement.

If you are notified in your renewal letter that you are included in the PRTL evidence sample you will be asked to:

  • have your PRTL record of achievement form verified, signed and dated by your line manager or equivalent. If your line manager is not an approved Care Council signatory they will be asked by the Care Council to confirm that they verified your record.

or

  • or if you don't have a line manager to support your PRTL record of achievement please follow the instructions about how to submit evidence

Individuals currently registered with more than one Care Council in the United Kingdom (UK)

If you are registered with an additional UK Care Council, you need to return your renewal application to us within 4 weeks of receiving your renewal pack. Once we have completed your renewal we will forward your application as appropriate to any other Council with which you are registered.

Each Council will make its own decision regarding the renewal of your registration. If you do not complete your renewal or request voluntary removal from the Wales Register by your renewal date you will be removed from the Wales Register. We will notify any other Care Council with which you are registered and your registration with all Care Councils will lapse.

Voluntary removal

If you are no longer working in social care or work outside Wales you can apply at any time during your registration period for removal from the Register. A voluntary removal section is part of your renewal pack. If you have received a renewal form and no longer wish to be registered please complete Part A, update your contact details and employment end date, if appropriate, on Part B, and return the whole renewal form to us.

If you are yet to receive your renewal application and wish to be removed please complete the voluntary removal form.
