How to register?

On these pages you will find information about who can register and how to go about it. If you are already registered and wish to renew, see information under current registrants.

Everybody who applies to register with the Care Council must agree to abide by the Code of Practice for Social Care Workers.

To apply you need to complete an application form. The form is available as a PDF to download or you can request a pack from the registration team. Once complete the form, supporting documents and application fee should be returned to the Care Council.

Filling in your application form

Each application form must be complete and endorsed by your employer or equivalent for your registration to be approved. Full information is available in the Information Booklet that accompanies the form and the Verifying and Endorsing Application Forms Guidance Notes.

You will receive a registration certificate when your application to register is approved. You will be reminded to pay your annual fee every year so it is very important that you notify us of any changes to your contact details. Your registration period lasts for 3 years at which time you can apply to renew.

Mandatory registration and who can register?

The following groups of workers must register to practice:

  • People who hold a social work qualification and practice social work or call themselves a social worker (Protection of Title introduced 1 April 2004)
  • Students participating on an approved social work degree course in Wales
  • Residential child care managers and workers
  • Adult care home manager (from 1 June 2011*)

The Assembly has announced that it will become mandatory for the following groups to register:

  • Domiciliary care service manager by 1 October 2012

The Register is also open to:

  • Adult care home and domiciliary care workers

*If you cannot apply to Register with the Care Council because you do not hold the required qualification for your post – please contact your CSSIW Regional Director who will consider your circumstance and whether you can practice while you complete your qualification.
