Social Work Students

The Care Council is responsible for the regulation of training for social workers at both Qualifying and Post-Qualifying level. It is also the Awarding Body for the Social Work Degree. We look at the content of degree courses and also offer a Bursary to those studying on approved Social Work courses.

If you are a Welsh resident studying on an approved Social Work course in Wales, you may be eligible to apply for a Social Work Bursary. You will find an applicant’s area within our social work bursary pages, where there is guidance on applying for the Social Work Bursary.

All social work students need to register with the Care Council before they start the degree. When they achieve their qualification they are then able to register as a Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW).

New Social Work Student - All social work students must register with the Care Council for Wales before they start their degree course. Here you'll find details of which Universities offer the degree.

Final year students (Newly Qualified Social Worker) - If you are a final year student and will be achieving your qualification in the near future you can apply to the Care Council for Wales to register as a Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW).

Central to all our work are the Code of Practice for Social Care Workers and Employers, which all registrants must abide by. To the left of this page you will find information about Confidence in Care, our campaign to raise awareness of the Code of Practice for Social Care Workers, and copies of the Codes as well as promotional materials and information about the campaign.
